What are Webrings for?

Webrings are ways for websites with similar purposes or content to get together and link up so that their users can gain from the experience of seeing other websites which will be of interest to them. They allow easy navigation for the visitor to go from site to site to site without having to expend time finding relevant sites via search engines.

How do they work?

When you join a webring it means that, just as the name implies, there are lots of webrings forming a circle – like a wagon train which is under attack in an old fashioned western movie. The websites are the wagons, you can go from one to the other by hopping off the back of one onto the front of the next etc. You can also go to a site in the ring in a random way. This process will eventually take you through all of the members.

What's a hub?

Just like a wheel the webring revolves around an axis – its hub. This page is that hub.

What's in it for me?

Well, if you join up your website to the webring you will get traffic from people who didn’t even know you existed until they landed on the site. In turn your regular users will also click on to other websites they probably don’t know about… everyone in the ring gains traffic as well as a sense of community.

How do I join?

Just follow the process below to join. When you have put the required html script (that we issue) in place on your front page Fatbirder will activate your site and your membership will start.

Are there any rules?

Not really… I only let webmasters sign up if their website is likely to be of direct interest to birders. If I find out any member’s domain no longer hosts a website about birds [it does happen – sometimes they lapse and are snapped up by pornographers etc.], it will be removed from the webring. I don’t object to advertising so long as it is directly relevant such as optics, birding holidays, bird food etc.
