Birder’s Pocket Logbook

Birder’s Pocket Logbook - ISBN 97819062471164 - Papworth Publishing July 2007 £8.50p http://www.birderslogbook.co.uk

Described by the publisher as ‘the essential handy pocket size logbook, designed by birders for birders’… well, it may not be essential but it certainly is a really good idea!

The logbook is tough, hardwearing and attractive. It easily slips into a pocket and the elastic page divider [not unlike the notebook used by the police] not only marks your place but stops the pages flapping about in the breeze; and, when not in use, keeps the book neatly closed.

In the front is the UK list allowing you to note your life list and up to five other tick lists in the life of the logbook, such as a year or county list. Also there is some useful info for birders including top books and websites… with an honourable mention for yours truly. The body of the log book are trip pages… simply headed allowing you to list birds seen, take notes or make sketches – indeed the last section of the book is for such additional notes and sketches.

Do I have any carping comments? Well not really but if really pressed I rue the lack of a pen or pencil tucked down the spine like pocket diaries used to have and there are some odd choices of common names – yes I am a grumpy old chauvinist who wants to keep all the old accepted British names and prefer Common Gull to Mew Gull and Little Ringed Plover to Little Plover. To be honest ‘though, I had to really strain to find anything I don’t like or would add.

At first glance I thought £8.50 was a tad expensive for a note book but at these days that would hardly buy you a pint and a cigar after a hard days birding [oh boy, those were the days]. For those of you wanting to make a gift of the logbook to the birder in your life it also comes, at a little extra, as a gift-box version and you can add initials or a full name to the cover!

This one is very definitely Fatbirder recommended!
