Birds of Taman Negara - An illustrated Guide & Checklist by Morten Strange & Denis Yong Draco Publishing 2006 ISBN 9810544413

We are lucky in the UK and US to have many guides specific to particular reserves, counties or other birding hot spots. When contemplating a visit it is not necessary to carry a country wide guide but one can take a pocket book in the knowledge that the vast majority of any birds we encounter will be covered in the book. Most other places are not so lucky although there are a few city guides [such as for Sao Paulo]. Given that Fraser’s Hill is a place I have long wanted to visit I was delighted to find that there is a site guide and one which, moreover, not just lists the birds but shows you photos of them – locating and ID in one handy pocket sized guide.

This handy book is essential for a visit to Fraser's Hill in Malaysia, one of the best birdwatching areas in SE Asia. The first part is a site guide and an ID-guide to the hill station itself and the Gap. 95 characteristic species are described and illustrated in colour photographs, all taken on location. The new annotated checklist in the second part of the book covers all 247 birds occurring plus an additional 61 hypothetical species… a great idea this, anticipating the ones you might luck upon that have yet to be officially recorded.

Now another top Malaysian birding locality is also covered – the National Park at Taman Negara. Produced and distributed exclusively by Draco this is the twin to Birds of Fraser's Hill. For the first time there is now a complete checklist available to all the 380 bird species occurring in Peninsular Malaysia's main National Park. This attractive volume also doubles up as an identification tool to the most conspicuous species, 98 are described and illustrated in new photographs taken on location. Information on accommodation in the park and the best trails and rare species is also included.

Both guides are compact and light weight, well-produced and attractive and will, I am sure, prove to be invaluable to anyone contemplating a trip to Malaysia.
