Quebec

Quebec, the troublesome, but irrisistable, francophone outpost of eastern North America, is a venue all birders should visit some time in their careers. With the easily accessible major cities of Montreal and Quebec situated along the St. Lawrance river and right underneath major continental migration routes a huge numer of the eastern north American species either nest here of else pass through on their way north or south in the spring or autumn. Montreal itself is the centre of a thriving population of birders with a number of world class reserves etc in the area - including several UNESCO Ramscar sites.

The western tip of Montreal island (visit the Morgan Arboretum) is a favoured route for migrating raptors which come this way by the tens of thousands when crossing the river valley while the Mountain, a huge park in the centre of Montreal, is warbler-central in mid to late May with many thousands of birds stopping for R&R and to flaunt themselves before the visitor.

It was not yet noon, so we headed for Quebec City. We overnighted in Drummondville, and arrived next day at our hotel on the outskirts of Quebec in time to take the shuttle bus downtown. Walking the streets of the old city was fun, and a clear and hot Sunday brought out both locals and tourists in droves for good people-watching. Lunch was abysmal, but a good dinner with a really fine wine compensated nicely.

...Up at 05.30hrs, few r.b.gulls on verges outside hotel. Went back to airport to sort out problems with the hire car; picked up Dodge Super Caravan 7 seater. Headed north out of Montreal to Quebec City, arrived c15.00hrs seeing turkey vulture on the way. Stayed in a small hotel in the old city for c£20 per person, spent the rest of the day in this beautiful city...
