         Blogs

Chestnut-backed Owlet Glaucidium castanonotum ©Amila Salgado http://www.birdwingnature.com

Blogs, from the words "web log", are simply personal online diaries. Strictly speaking - so the purists will tell you - they should follow a definite formula: latest entries should be always be at the top of the homepage with older entries (or 'posts') below them; they should include 'permalinks' and readers should be able to add 'comments'; they should be written on 'blogging software' and hosted - often for free - by blog companies like Typepad, Blogger, or Blogspot; and they should never be referred to as "websites".

Like anything else though, blogs are evolving and these strictures are being broken down. Arranging posts chronologically will always be with us, but whilst using blog software certainly takes all the difficulties out of learning html (the 'language' websites are written in) some birders, especially photographers, find the narrow columns a little restrictive and prefer to build their own. In many cases what differentiates a birding "website" from a birding "blog" is difficult to see - but as long as it's interesting and it's a good read, does it really matter?

Why do 'bloggers' keep blogs? The world-wide blog community (the 'blogosphere') is generally friendly and welcoming: it's a fun place to hang around in. Keeping a blog is really no more difficult than keeping a notebook - but it's a great deal easier to share your thoughts and your sightings with your mates when they can read what you have to say in the comfort of their own home. Does that make them worth reading? Sure, some blogs lead to dead ends or are infrequently updated, but some of them are funny, irreverent, well-informed, well-written, or lavishly illustrated. Try a few out from the list below - you never know what you might find...

[Birding BLOGS are no different from other web logs – some people are inveterate diary keepers and others start the year with great enthusiasm and then fade away… I have listed those logs which are either still continuing well or have a considerable number of entries even when they have not been updated for a while… please let me know of any others out there… Fatbirder]

A tale of two cockies

http://www.juliusbergh.com:80/cocky/
...About eight years ago a wild Australian Sulphur Crested Cockatoo flew into a car and broke its wing. The motorist took it to the Vet in Nerang, Queensland, who had to amputate the wing. We adopted her - for which we needed a National Parks and Wildlife permit - and kept her in a cage outside where she was often visited by wild Cockatoos. One of the things that impressed us was how she would push lettuce leaves through the bars of the cage, offering food to visitors...

Adventures of a Bird Girl

http://helenalovesbirds.blogspot.com/
I am a 13 year old bird-watcher, or birder. I often have had to deal with adults (birders) assuming, because I am young, I don't actually know what I am talking about. I proved with my old website that, if I kept my age anonymous, people took me seriously and actually found me quite knowledgeable about birds, even after knowing my age...

Bird Advocates

http://birdadvocates.blogspot.com/
Americans are going to have to wake up and become more vocal and dedicated at protecting our wild life than the feral cat enablers are at allowing cats to kill them. Cats are cute, yes, but a feral cat munching on a clutch of a threatened bird species is not. Trap, neuter, release programs produce a healthier, more efficient killing machine. All they are doing is enabling the cats in their destruction. TNR enthusiasts claim if you remove one cat another moves in. Okay, no problem, I remove that one, too. Euthanasia of the millions of feral cats now killing billions of native animals each year is the only effective answer.

Geobirding – The infusion of birding & geography

http://birdfreak.com/geobirder/
Geography and birding go hand in hand. Geobirding is the infusion of birding and geography. Geobirding is not just a science, but an engaging way to connect birders to the where, when, and why of birds. The Birdfreak Team created this blog to offer Geobirding its own portal for discussion and progression. The purpose of this blog is to discuss ideas and share thoughts on the natural environment by using all branches of geography and how they relate to birds. Are you a Geobirder? Let us know and if you have any suggestions, topic thoughts, or just want to say hi, leave a comment...

Organised by dedicated local patcher of Lakeside, Simon Ingram, the aim is for the three teams to try and score as many points as they can, by spotting the most amount of species, with rarer ones scoring more points. I have not yet received any news about the total list although as a member of Barbarah's Bunting, who came second, I can say that we recorded 35 species...
