The links below are to sites specialising in bird song and sound. On some you will find extensive libraries of bird song from around the world, others are specialised or limited. As always, the fatbirder welcomes more links.

Some of the most beautiful birdsong anywhere! Everything from amateur recordings to the massive archives stored in the University libraries. Many of the sites have recordings protected by copyright. Downloading is not free and may well not be possible as lots are encrypted. Before you resent this remember that someone`s livelihood may depend on respecting their copyright. Non-commercial use may be granted for free by some... it costs nothing to ask.

Bird calls and songs

Bird Song Mnemonics

http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/2965/mnemonic.htm
Technically, mnemonics are gimmicks we use to remember songs and calls, while phonetics are actually what the bird is saying. For example, pewees say pewee and Phoebes say phoebe so those are phonetics. Barred owls say who cooks for you, but not really. That`s a mnemonic. I think that we all use the two interchangeably. There are also comparative sounds, i.e., when we compare a song or call to something. For example, a red-breasted nuthatch sounds like a tin horn or a common grackle sounds like a rusty pump handle. Of course, all of this takes a great deal of imagination and creativity, but that`s the fun of it, right? Another useful N American guide.

Earbirding.com

http://www.earbirding.com/blog
Recording, identifying, and interpreting bird sounds… A birder since my childhood in South Dakota, I got started identifying bird songs by studying the classic “Birding By Ear” field guides in the Peterson series. It wasn’t until 2003, when I faced the frustrations of studying sounds for my first trips to Mexico and Costa Rica, that I fell into my current obsession with finding new and better ways to learn, describe, and catalog bird sounds. Along the way I got obsessed with recording and formal bioacoustics too…

Fiddle Tunes - For the Birds

http://www.singingwolfrecords.com/
Cheeky but I couldn`t resist ading this! This is one of the tastiest independent label albums you will come across any time soon. The eclectic mix of Texas fiddle and bluegrass to Celtic and jazz may raise an eyebrow or two, but the entire collection of songs is tied together by a single theme. All songs are tunes with bird names. The standards are wonderfully interpreted without losing the original integrity, and the originals Arvel composed are an incredible mastery of the music inspired by the calls and characteristics of our winged friends...
