Survey of the Birds of Paraná
Hori Consultoria Ambiental http://www.hori.bio.br/ with the support of several individuals and entities linked to Ornithology, is planning the 1st Collaborative Survey of the Birds of Paraná” (IPAVE-2012), an event that will be held the week of 24 to 30 September 2012, to commemorate the Centenary of Ornithology in State of Paraná (1912-2012).
The proposal is to gather a large amount of information on the avifauna of Paraná for a set period of time and through the collaboration of dozens of people. Everyone can participate, from professional ornithologists to amateur birdwatchers and photographers who are sufficiently qualified to identify the species recorded. In addition, photos and sound recordings will be posted on the site WikiAves http://www.wikiaves.com.br/ and in online databases of lists, like Táxeus: Lists of species http://www.taxeus.com.br/
It is easy to participate. To do so, collaborators will conduct bird counts according to the protocol defined below in one or more places included within the territorial limits of Paraná between 24 and 30 September 2012.
Each location surveyed shall contain:
1. Location Name and Municipality
2. Geographic coordinates
3. Date and time of observations
4. Full name of all observers; and
5. List of species recorded.
Standardized worksheets and other guidelines will be distributed at the time of registration.
The exchange of messages and information will be made possible through a Facebook newsgroup especially prepared for the event. It is suggested that participants enroll in this group in order to facilitate communication. Simply log in here: http://br.groups.yahoo.com/group/ipavepr/ and enter your information.
The final document regarding this activity will be published in the form of a book that, once completed, will be freely available for viewing and downloadable via the Internet. This work will contain several chapters, with each participant gaining authorship.
Currently, we already have more than one hundred collaborators in nearly 50 municipalities, representing a wide geographical area and high overall species richness. The most important goal of the event is to promote the gathering of many diverse people who study ornithology or enjoy birds through birdwatching as a leisure activity.
